Drawing on the relationships between history, territory, and displacement, Paulo Nazareth brings the exhibition Esconjuro to Inhotim.
Since April 2024, Galeria Praça and other locations throughout Inhotim have been occupied by the artist over a total period of 18 months, divided into four seasons: autumn, spring, winter, and summer, establishing the exhibition as a living and dynamic presence.
Working across a diverse and distinctive range of languages — from paintings to installations —Paulo Nazareth invites us to engage with other ways of making, as well as different ways of negotiating, planning, building, celebrating, and reaping the fruits of a broad and generous gesture of reinvention, in which artworks are exchanged, added, and repositioned throughout the exhibition period in the park.
In its autumn configuration, on view from April to November 2024, the works explored different ways of relating to the land, its cycles, and the transformations they bring about in living beings. In addition, the works reflected historically established practices of exploitation and contestation of territory.
In November 2024, the spring configuration arrived, focusing on transmutation, movement, and migration. The walls of Galeria Praça were painted black as a reference to charcoal, which, in many Afro-Brazilian traditions, is associated with transformation, purification, and protection.
The exhibition’s third configuration, winter, opened in June 2025. With the season’s characteristic atmosphere of introspection, new works by Paulo Nazareth occupied Galeria Praça and other locations throughout Inhotim.

Summer arrived at Esconjuro in February 2026. The urgency of the season permeates this final configuration of Paulo Nazareth’s exhibition. Galeria Praça is now a space of retreat; an architectural “mandinga” in which time pulses beneath the protection of lace-like white, celebrating the maturity of an exhibition that, like a home or an oratory, unfolds through the layering of rites and affections.
